Megalodon

🦈

Megalodon

Megalodon (Otodus megalodon) was the largest shark — and one of the largest predators — ever to live.

📏 How big was it?

  • Estimated length: 50–60 feet (15–18 meters)
  • Weight: Up to 50–70 tons
  • Teeth: Up to 7 inches (18 cm) long

For comparison, the modern Great white shark is usually about 15–20 feet long — megalodon was about 3 times longer and far heavier.

🦴 When did it live?

  • Lived between 23 million and 3.6 million years ago
  • Went extinct long before humans appeared

🍽 What did it eat?

Megalodon hunted:

  • Whales
  • Large fish
  • Other sharks
  • Marine mammals

Scientists have found fossil whale bones with massive bite marks matching megalodon teeth.

💥 How strong was its bite?

Estimated bite force:

  • Up to 40,000 pounds of force
  • One of the strongest bites of any animal ever

🌊 Why did it go extinct?

Likely reasons:

  • Cooling ocean temperatures
  • Decline in large whale populations
  • Competition from smaller, faster predators like early great whites
  • Changes in ocean ecosystems

👀 Is it still alive?

No scientific evidence supports that megalodon still exists.

Deep oceans are vast, but a predator that large would leave clear evidence — and none has been found.

If you’d like, I can also explain:

  • How it compares to the Godzilla-style movie versions
  • Whether it could defeat modern predators
  • Or how big it would look next to a human or school bus 😄
