Here are all three temptations of Jesus Christ in the wilderness, recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 4:1–11) and also in Luke 4:1–13.
1️⃣ Stones into Bread
After fasting 40 days and nights, Jesus was hungry.
The devil said:
“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
🔎 Temptation: Use divine power to satisfy physical hunger.
📖 Jesus’ reply:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
(Deuteronomy 8:3)
✅ Lesson: Spiritual obedience is more important than physical needs.
2️⃣ Throw Yourself from the Temple
The devil took Jesus to the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem and said:
“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:
‘He will command his angels concerning you…’”
Satan even quoted Scripture (Psalm 91), suggesting angels would save Him.
🔎 Temptation: Test God’s protection and prove identity through a dramatic miracle.
📖 Jesus’ reply:
“Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
(Deuteronomy 6:16)
✅ Lesson: Faith does not demand proof or manipulate God.
3️⃣ All the Kingdoms of the World
The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and said:
“All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me.”
🔎 Temptation: Gain power and glory without suffering — by worshiping Satan.
📖 Jesus’ reply:
“Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
(Deuteronomy 6:13)
After this, the devil left Him, and angels came to minister to Him.
✅ Lesson: True authority comes through obedience to God, not shortcuts.
🌿 Big Picture Meaning
The three temptations represent:
- Physical needs (bread)
- Pride / testing God (jumping from the temple)
- Power and control (kingdoms of the world)
In each case, Jesus resisted by quoting Scripture and trusting God.
If you’d like, I can also explain how these temptations relate to everyday life today.
