2 bacteria x constipation

Constipation is usually related to diet, hydration, gut motility, or medications — not a single infection. However, certain bacteria are associated with slower bowel movement or constipation-predominant symptoms.

Here are two bacteria linked with constipation:

1️⃣

Methanobrevibacter smithii

  • Actually an archaea (not a true bacterium), but commonly grouped with gut microbes.
  • Produces methane gas in the intestine.
  • Methane slows intestinal transit time.
  • Strongly associated with IBS-C (constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome).
  • Higher methane levels → slower stool movement.

2️⃣

Clostridium difficile

  • Usually causes diarrhea, but in some cases (especially severe infection or ileus) it can lead to reduced bowel movement and abdominal distension.
  • More commonly linked with antibiotic use.

Important Note

Chronic constipation is more commonly due to:

  • Low fiber intake
  • Low water intake
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Certain medications (iron, opioids)
  • Reduced physical activity

If you’d like, I can also list:

  • Good bacteria that help relieve constipation
  • Natural remedies
  • Medical causes for exam preparation 😊
