3 points — Why night owls are more likely to suffer from heart disease
- Late sleepers show worse cardiovascular health.
People who go to bed very late have about 79% more poor cardiovascular health, and 16% higher risk of heart attack or stroke over 14 years, with the risk highest in women. - It’s the lifestyle that often comes with staying up late.
Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital say night owls are more likely to have irregular sleep, smoking habits, and poor diets, which together raise heart-disease risk. - Earlier sleepers tend to do slightly better.
Data from over 300,000 adults in the UK Biobank found:
- Evening types (~2 a.m. bedtime): worse heart health
- Intermediate (~10 p.m.): neutral
- Morning types (~9 p.m.): 5% fewer had poor heart health
