  • Carl Jung viewed repeated sacred rituals as collective archetypal acts. The daily Dhwaja Bandha at the Jagannath Temple functions psychologically as renewing the community’s connection with the divine “Self” each day.
  • The dangerous climb to tie the flag mirrors Jung’s idea of a symbolic ascent — confronting risk to reach a higher center. Ritualized elevation (top of the temple) reflects the psyche striving toward transcendence.
  • Keeping the old flag as a protective relic fits Jung’s concept of charged symbols: physical objects become containers of collective meaning, giving people psychological security and a sense of participation in the sacred.
