DB ceremony

  • The Dhwaja Bandha (flag-tying) ritual at the Jagannath Temple happens every evening, when a temple servitor climbs the 65-meter shikhara and ties a new sacred flag (Patitapabana Bana) to honor Jagannath.
  • The climb is done without safety gear, facing the temple (never turning his back to the deity). Devotees believe if the flag is not changed even once, it is an inauspicious omen.
  • The old flag is removed and distributed as a blessed relic (prasada) to devotees, who keep it at home for protection and good fortune.
