DMHC. Rahu

Rahu is a powerful figure in Hindu mythology and astrology. He is not a physical planet, but a shadow entity associated with eclipses and karmic influence.

🐍 Mythological Origin

According to the story in the Bhagavata Purana, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the gods and demons produced the nectar of immortality. A demon named Swarbhanu disguised himself as a god to drink the nectar.

The Sun god Surya and the Moon god Chandra alerted Vishnu, who cut off Swarbhanu’s head with his Sudarshan Chakra.

However, since he had already tasted the nectar, he did not die.

  • His head became Rahu
  • His body became Ketu

Because of this, Rahu is believed to periodically “swallow” the Sun and Moon — causing solar and lunar eclipses.

🔭 Rahu in Astrology (Vedic Astrology)

In Hindu astrology:

  • Rahu is a shadow planet (Chhaya Graha)
  • It represents obsession, desire, illusion, ambition, foreign influences, materialism, and sudden events
  • It is associated with the North Lunar Node

Rahu is not always negative. It can bring:

  • Fame
  • Technological advancement
  • Foreign travel
  • Unconventional success

But it can also cause:

  • Confusion
  • Addiction
  • Deception
  • Sudden upheaval

🌓 Astronomical Meaning

Astronomically, Rahu corresponds to the ascending (north) node of the Moon’s orbit — the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic moving northward. Eclipses occur when the Sun and Moon align near Rahu or Ketu.
