P CORROSIVE INGESTION X ENDOSCOPY

 A

The study titled "Corrosive Substance Ingestion: When to Perform Endoscopy?" by Ufuk Ateş and colleagues, published in April 2025 in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, investigates the criteria for performing endoscopy in pediatric patients following corrosive substance ingestion.(ouci.dntb.gov.ua)

🔍 Study Overview

  • Objective: To determine when endoscopy is necessary for children who have ingested corrosive substances.

  • Methodology: The study retrospectively analyzed 172 pediatric cases of corrosive ingestion treated between July 2015 and December 2021. Initially, all patients underwent endoscopy. However, starting in January 2020, endoscopy was reserved for patients exhibiting hypersalivation and dysphagia.(ouci.dntb.gov.ua)

🧪 Key Findings

  • Patients with Hypersalivation:

    • 19 patients underwent endoscopy.

    • Findings included:

      • Grade I corrosion: 5 patients

      • Grade II-A: 1 patient

      • Grade II-B: 3 patients

      • Normal findings: 10 patients

  • Patients with Dysphagia:

    • 14 patients underwent endoscopy.

    • Findings included:

      • Grade I corrosion: 1 patient

      • Grade II-A: 2 patients

      • Grade II-B: 4 patients

      • Normal findings: 7 patients

  • Patients without Hypersalivation or Dysphagia:

Conclusion

The study concludes that endoscopy is not necessary for pediatric patients who have ingested corrosive substances unless both hypersalivation and dysphagia are present simultaneously. This approach can prevent unnecessary procedures in asymptomatic children.(ouci.dntb.gov.ua)
