“Open terrain” has no obstructions in any direction. In this situation an enemy can easily chase you down if you retreat, because there is no hiding place. Therefore, make sure that you actually have enough strength to win the battle. Furthermore, when on vast, open land it is incorrect to make the first move; stay in formation and await the enemy attack.
