NLS Q10: The initial assessment of an apnoeic baby cannot predict the extent of resuscitation required. Select one: a. True b. False Incorrect Feedback The baby who is apnoeic at birth may be in primary apnoea or terminal apnoea. Some may be in the agonal gasping phase but have yet to gasp. In all three of these scenarios, the heart rate may be slow, the baby floppy and the colour blue/white. It is only after starting resuscitation and assessing the response that you get some idea of how much resuscitation is required. The baby in primary apnoea will need less help and respond more quickly than the baby in terminal apnoea.
