P MISSING TESCLR TORSION

A16-year-oldteenagerwasbroughttoa
MassachusettsEDcomplainingofse-
verelowerrightquadrantabdominalpain.2
He alsoreportedexperiencingnauseaand
vomitingbutnoothersymptoms.Hewas
examinedandgivenmedicationsfornau-
seaandvomiting.Bloodworkandanab-
dominalultrasoundandCTscanwere
obtained,andallwerenormal.Ageneral
surgeonwasconsulted.Thepatientwas
dischargedtohome.Allegedly,thepatient's
genitaliawerenotexamined.Thefollowing
day,thepatientreturnedtotheEDwith
righttesticularpain,andhewasdiagnosed
withtesticulartorsion.Hewastakento
theoperatingroomforascrotalexplora-
tion,whichresultedinarightorchiectomy.
ThepatientsuedtheEDphysician
whotreatedhiminitiallyandallegedthat
thefailuretoperformatesticularexamina-
tionordiscusstorsionwithateenagemale
patientcomplainingoflowerabdominal
painofunknownoriginamountedtoade-
parturefromthestandardofcare.
A $300,000settlementwasreached.
