Scientists think one of the functions of sleep is to forget excess information.
The period of sleep in which we dream is also when our brains actively forget memories, new research finds.
This may be part of the reason that we forget most of our dreams.
Whether or not we remember new information is down to a group of neurons deep in the brain.
The neurons produce a substance called melanin concentrating hormone (MCH).
When this hormone is secreted during sleep, some memories are ditched.
