Is the self an illusion? Not entirely. We enter the world as open, absorbing beings, shaped by the sights, sounds, and experiences that surround us. Over time, we craft a mental armor to shield ourselves from threats—this armor, this protective layer, is what we call the ego.
At birth, we are fragile, uncertain, and vulnerable. As we grow, we learn to recognize both our strengths and our weaknesses. Yet the more we shut ourselves off from others’ perspectives, the more the ego can swell, creating a barrier that feels unbreakable—though in truth, it is fragile and easily shattered.
The strongest foundation, then, is one built on moral principles, a core that guides us even when the ego wavers. The self, in its truest form, is meant to be our steadfast companion in life. To honor it, we must cultivate love, acceptance, and appreciation for what makes us distinct, finding in ourselves both courage and grace.
