Anapanasati Sutta

The Anapanasati Sutta (“Discourse on Mindfulness of Breathing”) is a foundational teaching of the Gautama Buddha. In it, the Buddha explains how mindful breathing develops deep meditation and leads to awakening.

Core Idea

By observing the breath with awareness, a practitioner cultivates concentration, insight, and ultimately liberation.

The 16 Steps (Grouped into 4 Foundations)

The practice unfolds in four tetrads (groups of four), aligned with the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.

1️⃣ Contemplation of the Body

  1. Knowing a long breath as long
  2. Knowing a short breath as short
  3. Experiencing the whole body
  4. Calming bodily formations

👉 Develops bodily awareness and steadiness.

2️⃣ Contemplation of Feelings

  1. Experiencing joy
  2. Experiencing pleasure
  3. Experiencing mental formations
  4. Calming mental formations

👉 Refines emotional balance and inner ease.

3️⃣ Contemplation of Mind

  1. Experiencing the mind
  2. Gladdening the mind
  3. Concentrating the mind
  4. Liberating the mind

👉 Strengthens clarity and deep concentration.

4️⃣ Contemplation of Mental Objects (Dhamma)

  1. Contemplating impermanence
  2. Fading of passion
  3. Cessation
  4. Letting go

👉 Leads to insight and release.

Essence in One Line

Mindful breathing, practiced deeply, contains the entire path to awakening.

If you’d like, I can give a short practical guide on how to begin Anapanasati meditation.
