Bhagavad Gita 3.16
Sanskrit:
एवम् प्रवर्तितं चक्रं नानुवर्तयतीह यः
अघायुरिन्द्रियारामो मोघं पार्थ स जीवति ॥
Transliteration:
evam pravartitaṁ cakraṁ nānuvartayatīha yaḥ
aghāyur indriyārāmo moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati
Translation (concise):
“One who does not follow the wheel thus set in motion,
who lives for the senses alone,
lives in vain, O Arjuna.”
What is “the wheel” (
cakra
)?
In Chapter 3, Krishna describes a sacred cycle:
Action (karma) →
Sacrifice (yajña) →
Harmony with nature →
Sustenance of beings →
Right action again.
It is the wheel of reciprocity — giving, receiving, sustaining.
To refuse this wheel is to live self-centered, cut off from the whole.
Zen echo
A student asked, “What is the wheel?”
The master drew a circle in the air.
The student asked, “How do I follow it?”
The master erased the circle.
The wheel turns whether you approve or not.
The question is not whether it turns.
The question is:
Are you turning with it —
or being dragged?
