People say that being in the zone feels effortless, liberating, superhuman; you stay focused because,
each time you achieve a little more success in whatever it is you’re doing, your brain releases a hit of
dopamine. It’s that leap of joy in your heart when you splash into the pool after doing a double-back,
jack-knife triple somersault off the high-dive board with both feet perfectly pointed. It’s not the actual
swan dive that gives you the kick, it’s the hits of dopamine that give you the buzz. The swan dive
actually hurts like hell.
