BABY CRIES AT BIRTH

When a baby cries, it demonstrates that the airway is open. Pressure changes within the lungs (increased intrathoracic pressure) which allows inflation of the lungs and establishment of lung capacity.
Breathing and crying help to establish normal resting lung volumes.
The process of establishing breathing and oxygenation of the lungs also triggers a cascade of changes from fetal circulation to adult circulation. The temporary structures in the fetal circulation begin to cease functioning.
