CRP STDY

What is already known on this topic?

  • Early recognition of serious infection in acutely ill children presenting to hospital is crucial to improve outcome.
  • Laboratory-based C reactive protein (CRP) testing is used in specialist settings to support diagnosis and management decisions of such children.

What this study adds?

  • A point-of-care CRP test preceding clinical assessment can help stratify children into three risk groups.
  • High-risk (CRP >75 mg/L) children could be prioritised immediately for further assessment and management by senior staff.
  • 7 features in the intermediate and 11 features in the lower risk group further classify children as at risk of a serious infection or not.
