A
“Roger that” means “I received and understand your message.”
The phrase comes from the radio phonetic alphabet used in aviation and the military. In that system, each letter is spoken as a word. The letter R stood for “Roger”, and R meant “Received.”
So:
R = Roger
Roger = Received
“Roger that” = Message received and understood
This originated in early radio communication and later became part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization phonetic alphabet tradition (today “R” is officially Romeo, but “Roger” stuck in common speech).
Examples:
“Meet at 0900.”
“Roger that.” → I got it.
It doesn’t necessarily mean agreement — just acknowledgment.
