It is the spirit that quickeneth. — JOHN 6:63

 A

Such a sharp line.

In John 6:63, Jesus is basically saying:
spiritual life comes from God’s Spirit — not from “mere flesh,” effort, or literalism.

A few layers that are going on in that verse:

  • “The flesh profiteth nothing” doesn’t mean the body is evil. It means human power alone can’t produce eternal life.

  • “It is the spirit that quickeneth”quickeneth means gives life. The Spirit is what makes someone alive in the deepest sense.

  • “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” — Jesus is saying his teaching isn’t just information. It’s life-giving, if received spiritually.

It’s also a correction to people who were taking him too literally in that chapter (especially about eating his flesh and drinking his blood). He’s pushing them away from crude interpretation and toward spiritual understanding.

If you want, I can also give you:

  • a modern-language paraphrase that keeps the punch, or

  • how different Christian traditions interpret it.
