P EPILEPSY X RESECTIVE SURGERY
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- The authors of this case series examined long-term clinical outcomes of resective epilepsy surgery for pediatric patients with electrical status epilepticus in sleep (ESES). They identified 14 patients with a median age of 6 years, 10 of whom underwent hemispherectomy. At an average 4 years’ follow-up, 12 patients had complete resolution of ESES, and 7 patients were seizure-free. Neuropsychological testing typically was stable to improved after surgery and resolution of ESES, indicating that surgical resection does not harm these patients.
- This is a limited retrospective study, but is the largest ESES cohort currently reported.
