Common COVID-19 symptoms in kids include fever, cough, red throat
According to findings published recently in The New England Journal of Medicine, common signs or symptoms of COVID-19 in children include fever, cough and pharyngeal erythema.
A review by the Chinese CDC found less than 1% of 72,314 cases of COVID-19 assessed in China occurred in children under age 10 years, and another study showed that the clinical manifestations of the disease appear to be less severe in kids. The authors of the new report found the same, writing that, “In contrast with infected adults, most infected children appear to have a milder clinical course.”
They evaluated children at the Wuhan Children’s Hospital, the only center in Wuhan assigned by the Chinese government to treat infected children aged younger than 16 years, according to the authors. The review included symptomatic and asymptomatic children who had known contact with someone suspected or confirmed of having COVID-19. A total of 1,391 children were assessed, and 171 were confirmed to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
The median age of an infected child was 6.7 years. Overall, 41.5% of the children had a fever, 48.5% had a cough, 46.2% had pharyngeal erythema and 15.8% showed no symptoms at all.
Three patients who had coexisting conditions required intensive care support and invasive medical ventilation. Coexisting conditions included hydronephrosis, leukemia and intussusception.
The child who had intussusception died after 4 weeks of care. Twenty-one patients were in stable condition, whereas 149 patients were discharged from care. – by Ken Downey Jr.
