P EIA X PRE EX SALB

 a

Using 2 puffs of salbutamol (ProAir, Ventolin, Proventil) 10 to 15 minutes before exercise is the standard standard-of-care prevention method for Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA)—also referred to as Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB).

How to Take It Correctly

  1. Timing: Inhale 2 puffs, spaced 1 minute apart, approximately 10 to 15 minutes before starting warm-up or exercise.

  2. Technique:

    • Shake the inhaler well before each puff.

    • Exhale completely away from the inhaler.

    • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, start breathing in slowly and deeply, and press down once on the canister.

    • Hold your breath for up to 10 seconds (or as long as comfortable) to allow the medication to settle in the lungs.

    • Wait 1 minute before taking the second puff.

  3. Use a Spacer: If available, using a spacer device ensures maximum medication delivery into the lungs rather than the back of the throat.

Key Considerations

  • Duration: The protective effect against EIA typically lasts 2 to 4 hours.

  • Rescue Use: If symptoms like wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath occur during exercise despite pre-medicating, take 2 additional puffs immediately and stop the activity.

  • Warm-up Routine: Pre-exercise salbutamol works best when combined with a gradual 10- to 15-minute warm-up routine.

  • Usage Limits: If you need salbutamol before exercise daily or more than 2–3 times a week for EIA, contact your primary care provider or pulmonologist. This often indicates underlying airway inflammation that requires a daily controller (preventer) inhaler, such as an inhaled corticosteroid.
