🧠 Panpsychism × The Individuation Problem

why do you have one unified experience, instead of being merged with everything?

Tiny experiences literally combine to form larger ones.

It’s unclear how subjective perspectives “add up.”
Experiences don’t seem divisible like Lego bricks.

Instead of building up:
The universe is fundamentally one cosmic consciousness.
Individual minds are localized expressions within it.
This avoids combination —
but raises:
How does the One become many?

Some argue individuation tracks:
Causal integration
Information boundaries
Self-organizing systems
A brain forms a tightly integrated system.
That integration defines a center of awareness.
This aligns with certain interpretations of Integrated Information Theory (IIT).
4️⃣ Connection to Indra’s Net
If reality is like Indra’s Net:
Every node reflects the whole.
Yet each node is distinct.
Panpsychism + Indra’s Net suggests:
Consciousness is universal,
but perspectival through structure.
The net is continuous.
The jewels create apparent centers.
5️⃣ Non-Dual Perspective
From non-duality:
Individuation is appearance within consciousness.
Boundaries are conceptual overlays.
Separation is functional, not ultimate.
The person = a pattern (habit, as Nisargadatta said).
The field = continuous.
6️⃣ Why This Problem Matters
If individuation can’t be explained:
Panpsychism risks collapsing into vague mysticism.
Or into monism without differentiation.
Or into incoherence about personal identity.
But if solved:
It offers a serious alternative to materialism.
