Turkana boy

Turkana Boy

Turkana Boy is one of the most important early human fossils ever discovered.

🔎 Discovery

  • Discovered: 1984
  • Discovered by: Kamoya Kimeu
  • Location: Near Lake Turkana in Kenya
  • Led by: Richard Leakey

🧬 Age & Species

  • Species: Usually classified as Homo erectus (sometimes called Homo ergaster)
  • Age of fossil: About 1.5–1.6 million years old
  • Age at death: Around 8–11 years old

🦴 Why It’s Important

  • It is the most complete early human skeleton ever found (about 40% complete).
  • Shows that Homo erectus had:
    • Long legs and short arms (modern human-like body proportions)
    • A tall, slender body adapted for walking and running long distances
    • A brain larger than earlier human ancestors

📏 Height

  • At death, he was about 5 ft 3 in (1.6 m) tall.
  • If he had reached adulthood, he may have grown to about 6 ft (1.8 m).

🏛 Where It Is Now

  • The fossil is housed at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi.

If you’d like, I can also explain how Turkana Boy changed our understanding of human evolution.
