Turkana Boy
Turkana Boy is one of the most important early human fossils ever discovered.
🔎 Discovery
- Discovered: 1984
- Discovered by: Kamoya Kimeu
- Location: Near Lake Turkana in Kenya
- Led by: Richard Leakey
🧬 Age & Species
- Species: Usually classified as Homo erectus (sometimes called Homo ergaster)
- Age of fossil: About 1.5–1.6 million years old
- Age at death: Around 8–11 years old
🦴 Why It’s Important
- It is the most complete early human skeleton ever found (about 40% complete).
- Shows that Homo erectus had:
- Long legs and short arms (modern human-like body proportions)
- A tall, slender body adapted for walking and running long distances
- A brain larger than earlier human ancestors
📏 Height
- At death, he was about 5 ft 3 in (1.6 m) tall.
- If he had reached adulthood, he may have grown to about 6 ft (1.8 m).
🏛 Where It Is Now
- The fossil is housed at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi.
If you’d like, I can also explain how Turkana Boy changed our understanding of human evolution.
