Gluteal amnesia

Gluteal amnesia (aka dead butt syndrome) — quick, clear gist:

  • It’s when your glute muscles “forget” to activate properly
  • Caused mostly by prolonged sitting, poor posture, and limited hip movement
  • Glutes get lazy → other muscles overcompensate (lower back, hamstrings, hip flexors)

Common signs

  • Lower-back pain
  • Hip or knee pain
  • Weak push-off when walking/running
  • Butt not “firing” during squats or stairs

Why it matters

  • Weak glutes = poor pelvic stability
  • Raises injury risk and hurts performance
  • Can mess with gait and posture over time

Fix (simple, effective)

  • Stand up and move every 30–60 minutes
  • Activate glutes daily:
    • Glute bridges
    • Clamshells
    • Hip thrusts
    • Squats (done correctly)

  • Stretch hip flexors (they’re usually tight)

One-liner

Gluteal amnesia isn’t memory loss — it’s a lifestyle problem.

If you want, I can give:

  • A 5-minute daily reset routine
  • Or explain why sitting shuts glutes off neurologically (it’s kinda fascinating)
