Another path is to hold on to the sense of consciousness; not of conscious processes, conscious thoughts or actions, but consciousness itself as the light which illumines all experience. This also is difficult at first, but it becomes easier with practice as it, too, is always present, even in deep sleep where we are conscious of the absence of all thought and perception, conscious only of the cloud of forgetfulness out of which dreams and the waking state arise (which is why we don’t practise in the deep sleep state— to practise we need a sense of agency)
