DR. ALOIS ALZHEIMER WAS a young and boisterous neurologist who counted
among his accolades both a medical degree from a renowned institution and
a citation for disturbing the peace. Among colleagues, he was known for his
mastery of microscopy, a skill he honed while working on a doctoral thesis
about the cellular life of earwax. In 1888, he took a job seeing patients at an
asylum in Frankfurt, Germany. It was there, thirteen years later, that he
came across a young woman who had lost her memory.
