But despite the struggle, there has also been an opportunity to learn. This summer, I read a book, The Great Influenza, by John Barry. It’s one that I’ve been meaning to read for quite a while. The influenza pandemic in 1918 lasted well into 1920 and had terrible mortality. George Santana once said “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” and I just keep thinking about that in the context of this pandemic and previous one. Reading the book highlighted some parallels and differences between what happened then and now. As a physician, I can appreciate the strides that we’ve made over the last century, how far medicine has come since then. In fact, at the start of the 1918 pandemic, many scientists believed that Pfeiffer’ bacillus (Haemophilus influenza) caused the pandemic, compared to how quickly we were able to identify and sequence SARS-CoV-2.

I learned meditation from a wonderful Buddhist nun.

She used to say:

People love to tell me about their spiritual experiences: the energy, the buzzing, the light. They think these experiences are meaningful!

She was sweet as pie, so her dismissal of her students’ experiences seemed out-of-character to me.

What could be more fundamental than someone’s experience?

Years later, I finally understood what she meant:

We have to turn toward awareness to know what we actually are.

To turn toward means simply to be what we are, without experiencing or knowing anything else.

White light is beautiful, but it derives from our habit of externalizing awareness, rather than simply being it.

This doesn’t make these experiences bad by any means.

We just have to understand that all experiences represent the same temptation: to pursue experience instead of simply being awareness.

To borrow a Buddhist expression:

Pursuing experience is like drinking saltwater - it only makes us thirstier.

When we abide as awareness, we avoid all these mirages and discover the eternal fountain.
