The ego is the one watching the show.
The ego is the lead character, the supporting cast, the movie, the watcher, and the projector.
When the ego rises, all things rise with it.

As Siddharth Janakiraman said in his answer, the Self is the screen.
It doesn’t watch the movie and is unaffected by it.
The Self is what remains when all that comes and goes has gone.
The eternal reality is our real self.
