Marcus Aurelius lived faced wars during his entire reign and caught the Antonine Plague by the end of his life, from which he died.

Antonine Plague

The Antonine Plague of 165 to 180 AD, also known as the Plague of Galen, was an ancient pandemic brought to the Roman Empire by troops who were returning from campaigns in the Near East. Scholars have suspected it to have been either smallpox or measles.

A big part of stoicism is Amor Fati, which means if you had your leg chopped of you don't just have to accept it, you have to love it.

#######################

The Stoics are an interesting case. Their goal of wisdom is reached when a person has experienced enough "clear and unmistakable impressions" to the point that they are able to see reality as it is.

#########################

These flashes of "clear and unmistakable impressions" (I mean the phantasiai kataleptikai) do sound a lot like Buddhist insight. And according to Stoic sources they can be achieved by morality and by a training that gradually removes wrong conceptions from the person's mind. And they did have mental practices that do resemble meditation, particularly meditations on death and impermanence.

########################

Furthermore, if you accept as true the example of Mucius Scaevola, an unlearned man who was able to willingly melt his hand to the bone on a fire without moving, you could argue that achieving high states of concentration is neither impossible nor dependent on intellectual pursuits.

Even if you accept all the similarities above, the difference between Buddhism and Stoicism will be that Stoicism doesn't have continuous transmission until today, and they probably haven't produced buddhas.
