P GLUTEN X CELIAC DIS
- This study followed-up newborns with the HLA antigen genotype enrolled in the TEDDY birth cohort, until the age of 5 years, to assess the association between gluten intake and the risk of celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease. Every gram increase in the intake of gluten per day in the first 5 years of life was associated with a significant increase in the risk of celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease among the 6605 children analyzed (the absolute risk difference was 6.1% and 7.2%, respectively).
- These findings suggest that gluten intake in the first 5 years of life is an independent risk factor for celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease among at-risk children.
