Skill and Intelligence Don’t Immunize Us from Being Deceived

Skill and Intelligence Don’t Immunize Us from Being Deceived

Neville Chamberlain seeks a face-to-face meeting with Adolf Hitler, we see the same belief:

If I just meet him personally, I’ll be able to judge his character.

History shows that this confidence can be dangerously misplaced.

Lesson: Intelligence, experience, and proximity do not guarantee insight into another person’s true intentions.

  • We are not good at detecting deception—even when trained to do so.

  • We are wired to trust, which makes us vulnerable.

  • Expertise does not protect us from being misled.
