Prahlada
and Nishkam Bhakti
Prahlada
Prahlada is a revered devotee in Hindu tradition, best known from the Bhagavata Purana. He was the son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who hated Lord Vishnu.
Despite his father’s intense opposition and severe punishments, Prahlada remained completely devoted to Lord Vishnu. His unwavering faith ultimately led to the appearance of Narasimha, who protected Prahlada and destroyed Hiranyakashipu.
Prahlada symbolizes:
- Unshakable faith
- Fearlessness
- Pure devotion from childhood
- Spiritual courage
Nishkam Bhakti (Selfless Devotion)
Nishkam means “without desire,” and Bhakti means “devotion.”
So Nishkam Bhakti means devotion without expecting anything in return.
It is:
- Loving God without asking for wealth, power, or protection
- Serving with pure intention
- Surrendering completely to the Divine will
Prahlada is one of the greatest examples of Nishkam Bhakti because:
- He did not pray for safety even when tortured
- He did not hate his father
- He remained calm and surrendered fully to Vishnu
Essence
Prahlada teaches that:
True devotion is not based on fear, reward, or gain —
it is based on love and surrender.
If you’d like, I can also explain how Nishkam Bhakti connects to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.
