BG 7.18

 Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 7, Verse 18

Sanskrit:

उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् ।

आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥

Transliteration:

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tv ātmaiva me matam

āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṁ gatim

Translation (simple):

All these devotees are noble, but the wise one (jñānī) is especially dear to Me. In My opinion, such a person is as My very self, because their mind is firmly fixed on Me alone as the supreme goal.

Speaker: Krishna speaking to Arjuna.

Meaning

In earlier verses (7.16–7.17), Krishna describes four kinds of devotees who approach Him:

  1. Those in distress
  2. Those seeking wealth or benefits
  3. The curious seekers of knowledge
  4. The wise (jñānī) who know the truth

In 7.18, Krishna says:

  • All these devotees are good and noble 🙏
  • But the jñānī is special because:
    • They love God not for benefits, but for God alone
    • Their identity and devotion are fully united with the Divine

So Krishna says the wise devotee is “like My own Self.”

Key Idea

This verse emphasizes pure devotion and realization:

  • Devotion based on needs is good
  • But devotion based on true understanding and unity with the Divine is highest ✨

If you want, I can also explain:

  • 7.16–7.19 together (the full teaching about the four devotees)
  • Or the deep Advaita / Vedanta interpretation of verse 7.18.
