Here’s a touching story involving Ma Sarada Devi (the Holy Mother) and a cat that beautifully reflects her compassion and spiritual view of life 🌺 — from the traditional accounts of her life:
🐱
The Cat at Holy Mother’s Feet
While living in her home (especially back in her village of Jayrambati), there was a stray cat that often wandered into the house. The cat would sometimes steal food, as cats naturally do.
Some people — including one of the brahmacharis (monastic attendants) — didn’t like the cat’s behaviour and even treated it harshly. One day he roughly threw the cat away.
When Holy Mother learned of this:
✨ She was deeply pained.
She told the attendant:
“Scold the cat, but do not beat it. Please feed it regularly so it will stop stealing food, and don’t let it go to other houses.”
Then she added something very striking:
💗
“Do not beat the cat — for even in that cat am I.”
(or in some versions: “I dwell inside that cat too.”)
With those words she affirmed the presence of the Divine in every living being, not just humans. Even an animal that may seem insignificant or mischievous was, to her, a child of the same universal Mother.
After that, even the attendant stopped hurting the cat and instead helped feed it regularly.
💛
What the Story Teaches
This incident beautifully shows:
- Ma Sarada’s compassion for all beings — human and animal alike.
- Her deep belief that the Divine lives in everything, no matter how humble.
- The spiritual ideal of seeing oneness in all life — not just ego or form, but the essence within.
It’s one of the many small, real human moments in her life that reveal her motherly love, humility, and spiritual vision.
