Chokamela

Here is the story of Chokhamela and Namdev:

Story of

Chokhamela

 and

Namdev

Chokhamela was a poor devotee of Pandurang (also called Vitthal) who lived near Pandharpur in Maharashtra. He was born in the Mahar caste, which was considered a lower caste in the traditional social system. Because of this, he was not allowed to enter the temple of Pandurang.

Even though he faced discrimination, Chokhamela had deep faith and love for God. Every day he stood outside the temple and sang devotional songs called abhangs, praying sincerely to Pandurang.

One day, the great saint Namdev visited Pandharpur. When he heard Chokhamela singing with pure devotion, he was deeply moved. Namdev realized that true devotion is more important than caste or social status. He accepted Chokhamela as a fellow devotee and respected him greatly.

According to the traditional story, Pandurang himself loved Chokhamela’s devotion so much that he blessed him. This showed that God values sincere devotion, not a person’s caste or social position.

Moral of the story

  • True devotion is greater than caste or social differences.
  • God loves people with pure faith and a sincere heart.
  • The Bhakti saints like Chokhamela and Namdev spread the message of equality and devotion.
