In the philosophy of Vedanta (within Hinduism), the five koshas describe the layers covering the true self (Atman). During rebirth (reincarnation), not all koshas continue.
Koshas and rebirth
When a person dies:
1. Annamaya Kosha (physical body)
- This is the material body made of food.
- It dies and does NOT continue after death.
The inner koshas continue with the soul into rebirth:
2. Pranamaya Kosha 🌬️
- The life-energy sheath (prana).
3. Manomaya Kosha 🧠
- The mind and emotions.
4. Vijnanamaya Kosha 💡
- The intellect and deeper awareness.
These subtle layers travel with the subtle body (sukshma sharira) and carry karma and impressions (samskaras) into the next life.
5. Anandamaya Kosha ✨
- The bliss sheath, closest to the Atman.
- It is also associated with the causal body and continues until liberation.
Simple summary
- ❌ Does not go into rebirth: Annamaya Kosha (physical body)
- ✅ Associated with rebirth: Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijnanamaya, Anandamaya
When liberation (moksha) is achieved, the Atman is no longer bound by these koshas or the cycle of rebirth.
✅ Short answer:
The subtle koshas (especially Pranamaya, Manomaya, and Vijnanamaya) continue into rebirth, while the physical Annamaya Kosha dies.
