I liken it to this: when you cross the road you look for a lull in the flow to cross. Now, you are looking for the quiet spot and not looking and observing the cars details. You know that the cars are there, but not studying each one. You don't observe each car, as in, “That's a silver Toyota deluxe, there's a Nissan SUV in black with red trim, that's a Mini with soft top and chrome features,” but you simply think, “Car, car, car space to cross the road. “ Likewise be aware of the thought but dont analyse it. Dont think, “Oh, I must get bread before going to the gym, pick up Fred's squash racquet and drop it off, go and get fuel for the car; must pay the electricity bill.” Instead, acknowledge the thought but don't inspect it- “Shopping, Squash, petrol, bill.” In short, acknowledge the the thought but let it pass and don't analyse it. As the Zen proverb suggests, it will visit, just don't invite it in for tea.
