P MENINGITIS MOSTLY YOUNG INFANTS UNDER 3 MO

 MOST VULNERABLE GROUP- YOUNG INFANT UB=NDER 3 MONTHS

THEY HAVE NON CNS PRESENTATION MOSTLY

A

NNT - 20 LP TO PICK UP 1 MENINGITIS

NNT: “1 LP in 20” — What it Means

If 1 lumbar puncture (LP) in 20 leads to a meaningful clinical benefit (e.g., diagnosis of meningitis that changes management), then:

NNT = 20

That means:

  • For every 20 LPs performed,

  • 1 infant will directly benefit (e.g., confirmed meningitis → targeted treatment, life-saving/complication-preventing intervention).

This is often used in neonatal practice to justify performing LPs with a low threshold, because even a relatively high NNT (20) is considered acceptable in high-risk, high-stakes conditions like neonatal meningitis.
