Jiddu Krishnamurti was rising to prominence. As a young man in India, Krishnamurti had been groomed by Annie Besant and Charles Leadbeater, British founders of the Theosophical Society, to become the spiritual leader of that society. After moving to California, Krishnamurti experienced a mystical awakening and a few years later the unexpected death of his brother. As a result, he became increasingly disenchanted with his role in the Theosophical Society. In 1929, he went out on his own, giving lectures to audiences throughout the world. In 1938, Krishnamurti met Aldous Huxley, a prominent British novelist, whose books The Perennial Philosophy, The Doors of Perception, and The Island were instrumental in popularizing yogic lore, mysticism, and Indian philosophy in the West. Throughout his life, Krishnamurti remained a signiɹcant and unique ɹgure in the integration of Eastern thought with Western concerns, ranging from physics to politics. He died in 1986.
