Although the distinction between thoughts on the one hand and sensory states (such as perceptions and bodily sensations) on the other hand is not difficult to grasp at an intuitive level, providing a clear and rigorous articulation of it is far from straightforward. Some theorists claim that thoughts can be distinguished from perceptual states and bodily sensations in virtue of the fact that thoughts involve the deployment of concepts whereas sensory states do not. The idea here is that although one can visually identify an object as a cat without possessing the concept of a cat, one cannot think about a cat without possessing the concept of a cat. However, the attempt to distinguish thoughts from sensory states in this way is controversial, not merely because many theorists claim that perception does involve concepts but also because it has proven very difficult to say precisely what concepts are.
