Statins and Risk of ICH in Individuals With a History of Stroke
- Stroke: A Journal of Cerebral Circulation
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- Although statin use is sometimes avoided in individuals with a history of stroke due to concern about increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), this study of 55,692 individuals—the largest study so far of its kind—found no evidence to support that concern. Follow-up was for a period of 10 years.
- Although further research is needed, these data suggest that statin use might reduce by approximately 50% the risk of ICH in patients who have experienced an ischemic stroke. The risk of ICH in patients who had previously experienced ICH remained about the same in statin users compared with the risk in nonusers.
