B WAY ENJOY THE RIDE It’s a wild life. Here we are on a small planet going around an ordinary star on the edge of one galaxy amidst a couple trillion others. Nearly 14 billion years have passed since our universe bubbled into being. And here we are now. Countless creatures have died so that tiny improvements in their capabilities could be stabilized through evolution in increasingly complex species, and eventually in us today. So many, many things have happened already. And here we are.

Imagine seeing a mountain pond. Breezes and storms can send waves moving across it, yet the pond as a pond is unmoving. The mind is like a pond, whose surface is awareness, and whose depths open into timelessness. Worldly winds blow and stir up thoughts and feelings that ripple across it, but eventually they settle down and it’s quiet again—and all the while, the pond itself is still. As you go through your day, be aware of spaciousness, edgelessness, and stillness. You can let go of any particular ripple and let go into being what you always are: whole, present, caring, peaceful, and full of possibility.

I don’t know so much if there are enlightened beings, but I know there are enlightened moments. SUZUKI ROSHI
