Firstly, any mantra should not be chanted for ‘benefits’, its not commerce. Rather than being a give and take, one should plan a give and give situation, Lord is great and will provide whatever one needs even beyond ones imagination.
Having said that, the biggest benefit of chanting any particular mantra is that it helps a person get into a trance - a special state of mind where one feels free from the day to day cluttering thoughts and feels much more relaxed, free, confident and empowered to act. Of all mantras Mahamritunjaya mantra is one of the oldest and known to be one of the most powerful ones. It is found in Rigveda and then Yajurveda.
According to Shiv Puran the mantra has the effect of healing and removing any fears a person may have. I had responded to one such question earlier, with personal experiences and is reproduced below -
I have seen and anyone can see the magical powers of mahamritunjaya mantra, just chant it with full faith. The eternal mantra is
Aum Triambakm - the three eyed God, Shiva
Yajamahe- whose praise we sing, on whom we meditate, perform yagya for
Sugandhim- sweet smelling, refers to air, breath, prana
Pushtivardhanam- nourishes all, and grows the health
Urvarukmev- uru is big, aruk is disease, death. Also means ripened cucumber
Bandhanan- bondages, stem of cucumber
Mritoyr- as death
Mukshayae- that leads to moksha, or release from the cycle of birth and death
amritat- immortality
This mantra is described as a way to conquer death. Death is encountered in many forms and is painful in every form. Death of projects we undertake, death of a friendship, a relationship (not of the friend or relative, but the relationship), the most scary death will be that if wisdom, judgement, intelligence.
Personally, we do startups in biotech / pharma and IT. Our first two companies were very successful. The third company, which was the largest venture we undertook faced challanges. I lost my dad one day and within 10 days lost my business partner who was a very close friend.
My dad had suffered several years a non curable disease, so he was relieved. But the business partner was young, healthy. The venture was complex with operations in India, North America, funding from UK, Australia. Sudden death of the technical head made customers withdraw, followed by investors going away very quickly. Finance head in Canada removed a lot of money from the company. Operations were shut down, very highly paid people lost jobs within a week.
This was not the worst. I had given jobs to many relatives who came forward when we were starting by saying they want to help, and that we will also need trustworthy people.
They first started blaming, and then got together and took the hurting business to court.
My wife has been a part of every startup, and together we are the ones who make anything happen. She went into clinical depression. For sons that was crucial year of entering college, for first time in life I was worried.
I have been a follower of Mahadev for decades, since my childhood. When I knew nothing, He blessed me with a faith in Him. At this stage I started Mahamritunjaya mantra.
Within one week I got a call from an employee of the now closed venture. She and her husband had joined us fresh out of college. Both came to see me and just said one thing we have three months of expenses saved by working for you, this was the company that gave us our first job. How will you handle all this alone? We have decided to help for three months. It seemed like a huge relief, most importantly that there are still humans who can be trusted. We paid them their salaries each month of course.
Next week a few people whom the business owed a lot of money got together and came. I had no option than to meet them, but had no money to pay, and knew they will press for it. This was another court case going to happen. Instead they said look we know what you are going through. We have decided to help out. Don't worry about money right now, let us know what we can do.
Our biggest expense was rent of factory which we had to keep until we can sell all equipment. The landlord was a very tough person. To my surprise he called very late the same night. My relatives kids had approached him. He said - is this what you are going through? You have them a living and this is what they are giving in return? Both me and wife started crying. Next day his son came with a letter that for one year we don't have to pay any rent, they are doing this by themselves.
The relatives case was running in the court, and was distressing. I would go on every date, but my story will fall on deaf ears, seemed like the judge had already made up his mind that we were the bad guys. Next week was another hearing, so we went. The judge started by saying he has studied the case thoroughly and believes there is no merit in. He told the relatives and their lawyer the company was trying to create jobs in the country, we need more such things and he doesn't find anything wrong in what we did. He dismissed the case completely that day without us even starting to plead.
The following week two more things happened -
- our son wanted admission to a very competitive college where admissions were 1–2 per 1000 applications. He got in interview call ahead of the written test. His result was not out yet. He came back and said the committee really liked the project he was doing for the community, they offered him admissions, but will have to show good results later.
- In another surprise in same week two people called me and my wife for a meeting. We did not know either from earlier. One was an investor and another a big pharma company. Both said almost the same thing in two separate meetings- that they were following us for some time and know all developments and how things are being handled. They asked our plans. By this time we had decided to move to another country. In both meetings to our utter surprise they said we can't let people like you leave the country and offered to help.
When I was introduced to Mahadev by my grandfather he had said, you may never see God, but if you keep faith, you will always find Him around you. Starting the Mahamritunjaya mantra at the lowest part of my life helped us turn around. He came or sent His people in so many forms, in so many places - actually every place we ever wanted Him.
If He allows and blesses me, I am not leaving this mantra for rest of my life and I tell everyone to take Him as your Guru and take the mantra.
