Neti Neti – Key Points
"Neti Neti" means "Not this, not this."
It is a method of negation used to remove false identification with the non-Self.
We mistakenly identify ourselves with the body, senses, mind, intellect, speech, and life-force (prāṇa).
The Upanishads negate each of these because they are objects of experience, not the true Self.
The Ātman/Brahman is the subject (the Knower) and can never become an object of knowledge.
Brahman cannot be fully described by words, thoughts, or concepts.
Neti Neti removes ignorance rather than revealing a new object.
The process helps silence the ego's tendency to objectify the Self.
By negating everything that is changing and limited, one recognizes the unchanging Witness (Sākṣī).
This prepares the mind for the "dramatic flip"—recognizing that Consciousness is present in every experience.
The goal is not emptiness but the realization that the Self is the ever-present light of awareness.
Thus, Neti Neti is a preparatory method leading to Pratibodha Viditam—the recognition of Brahman in every cognition, as taught in the Kena Upanishad.
