JUST NOT THIS JUST NOT THIS

 A

Neti Neti – Key Points

  • "Neti Neti" means "Not this, not this."

  • It is a method of negation used to remove false identification with the non-Self.

  • We mistakenly identify ourselves with the body, senses, mind, intellect, speech, and life-force (prāṇa).

  • The Upanishads negate each of these because they are objects of experience, not the true Self.

  • The Ātman/Brahman is the subject (the Knower) and can never become an object of knowledge.

  • Brahman cannot be fully described by words, thoughts, or concepts.

  • Neti Neti removes ignorance rather than revealing a new object.

  • The process helps silence the ego's tendency to objectify the Self.

  • By negating everything that is changing and limited, one recognizes the unchanging Witness (Sākṣī).

  • This prepares the mind for the "dramatic flip"—recognizing that Consciousness is present in every experience.

  • The goal is not emptiness but the realization that the Self is the ever-present light of awareness.

  • Thus, Neti Neti is a preparatory method leading to Pratibodha Viditam—the recognition of Brahman in every cognition, as taught in the Kena Upanishad.
