Large-scale brain imaging studies (over 3,000 scans) show that depression is associated with disruptions in white matter, the brain’s communication network that connects different regions.
These white matter changes can impair how efficiently brain areas involved in emotion regulation and cognitive processing communicate with each other.
As a result, individuals with depression may experience both emotional difficulties (like low mood and anxiety) and cognitive challenges (such as poor concentration and slower thinking).
