Nicodemus

 You probably mean Nicodemus.

He’s the Pharisee in the Gospel of John who comes to Jesus at night in John 3, where Jesus tells him about being “born again” / “born from above.” Nicodemus also appears in John 7, speaking up for fair hearing before judgment, and in John 19, helping prepare Jesus’s body for burial.

If you want the super quick version of the Nicodemus–Jesus scene:

  • Nicodemus recognizes Jesus is from God.
  • Jesus tells him that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
  • Nicodemus misunderstands it in a literal way.
  • Jesus explains spiritual rebirth.
  • This is the same passage that leads into John 3:16.

Also, the name Nicodemus comes from Greek and is often explained as something like “victory of the people.”

If you want, I can also give you:

a plain-English explanation of John 3, or a Christian / Catholic / Orthodox take on Nicodemus.
