P EMERGING ALLERGENS

 A

  • Around 1 in 7 life-threatening allergic reactions are due to foods not typically labeled as allergens.

  • Many official allergen lists have not been updated for years (EU list based on 2011 data).

  • Study analyzed 2999 cases of food-induced anaphylaxis in France (2002–2020).

  • Emerging food allergens identified include sheep milk and buckwheat (triggered 2.8% and 2.4% of severe reactions).

  • Other notable allergens: peas, lentils, alpha-gal (linked to red meat/mammal allergy), pine nuts, kiwi, apples, bee products, pollen, honey, royal jelly.

  • Goat and sheep cheese were particularly risky, especially in younger patients, with hidden exposures (in foods like pizza/tarts) raising danger.

  • Overall food allergies caused 41–43% of severe reactions (14% of reported cases).

  • Buckwheat, peas, lentils, and sheep/goat milk allergens should be added to EU mandatory labels.

  • Authors stress clearer labeling because such ingredients may appear in foods without consumers realizing.
