AUTOPILOTING THE PRESENT

Contacting the present moment means being psychologically present: consciously connecting with and engaging in whatever is happening in this moment. Humans find it very hard to stay present. Like other humans, we know how easy it is to get caught up in our thoughts and lose touch with the world around us. We may spend a lot of time absorbed in thoughts about the past or the future. Or instead of being fully conscious of our experience, we may operate on automatic pilot, merely “going through the motions.” Contacting the present moment means flexibly bringing our awareness to either the physical world around us or the psychological world within us, or to both simultaneously

Adhyasa in Sanskrit, which means superimposition. When you take your mind, your body, your possessions etc as you or yours, you are actually taking something that is not really yourself and superimposing it on you. But you are actually the subject, not any of these objects which are witnessed by the subject. In other words, the object is superimposed on the subject and thus the subject is actually identified with the object.

Karma Yoga is defined as doing your actions while surrendering the fruits of action to God.

But people interpret this in their own ways. Let me give you the basic idea behind Karma Yoga. Usually your actions are treated by you as a means to an end. You do something because you are attached to the fruit of action, something that will happen in the future. So, throughout your action and after your action is completed, you tend to live in the future and dwell on thoughts about the fruits of action. This takes you away from the present moment. But if you do your actions with full awareness while being fully present, the action itself becomes a spiritual practice. Attachment is a product of identification: clinging to the aggregates and deriving a sense of self from them

. Karma Yoga helps you to develop nonattachment. But non-attachment is not uninvolvement

People may go through one or multiple phases of the dark night of the soul. It always happens because of some kind of resistance. Your ego may either want to pull you back to the older way of living or take credit for the spiritual progress and want you to get liberated very quickly. Because, ego wants to add ‘liberation’ as one of the accomplishments of this separate self, which will never happen. Dark night of the soul is a revenge made by ego in some form. Sometimes the effects of the dark night can be very serious and may require medical help. But most of the people who are aware of this usually get past this stage without much problems.

Vedic verses are dated back to 1700 BC and the total body of Vedic texts have been divided into four: Rig veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharvaveda. Many Indians revere these vedas as holy and believe that Vedas are eternal and infallible. Vedas have been considered as divine revelations, revealed to ancient seekers when they were in deep meditation.

But if one looks with an unbiased mind, it is not difficult to understand that Vedas are just a compilation of various text and hymns created by different people probably over a period of thousand years or more. Also, it is very easy to see that Vedas emphasize these fire rituals more than anything else. Since the language and prosody was probably a recent development for people in Vedic age, it is understandable that they had various sentiments regarding Vedic verses. They saw them as holy and they thought that those verses have to be preserved. Vedas have been transmitted by oral tradition from ancient days to till date. People have tried to preserve the accent and pronunciation of Vedic verses as much as possible, because of the holiness they have attributed to vedas.

The period between 900 BC and 600 BC is probably the golden period of spirituality. This is when the two oldest and major Upanishads namely Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and Chandogya Upanishad were compiled. These two Upanishads were also anthologies of different poems composed by different people. But a sage who is mentioned in these Upanishad is Yajnavalkya, who was from Videha kingdom that is right next to Magadha. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad itself is credited to Yajnavalkya but scholars believe that the text was edited and interpolated over a period of time. It is important to note that the region where Yajnavalkya lived was full of those rebellious people who were against the authority of Vedas. Yajnavalkya and Uddalaka Aruni are considered as the earliest proponents of non-dual wisdom.

Yes.

Being aware of your awareness simply means finding the neutral, uninvolved witness that’s just watching everything dispassionately. You can find this the very first time you sit in meditation.

Many people can find it even walking down the street, without being in closed-eyed meditation.

It’s simply obvious that there is a part of you - mind - that’s having thoughts, feelings and body sensations, and responding to them, or outright identifying with them (“That’s who I am”and a part that’s just noticing all the above, including the mind that’s reacting to all these phenomena, while itself is not the mind and is not reacting…just aware of it, pure Awareness.

Once you’ve found that, and are aware of that Awareness, you’re done. Practicing remaining in or resting in that Awareness, witnessing everything from that non-place ‘place’ that can never be anything but stillness and peace, is all you ever need do.

Anything else, any other practice you add to that, is manipulation.

You are aware of your Awareness, you know you are that Awareness, your True Identity, and you know that any phenomena rising & falling that your Awareness sees, including your body, judgments, desires and ‘achievements,’ are just Reality, everything just as it Is, living through “you” until your body dies.

So what else could you want? What other ‘spiritual’ awarenesses or ‘accomplishments’ could you yearn for or focus on?

If you want more than just being aware of your Awareness and resting in that, that’s not enlightenment, that’s just ego-desire, and any efforts or practices you make in that direction are just ego-manipulation.

But because of our ego attachment, we all tend to make some of those efforts and try out some other practices anyway :-) Silly “us!”

Just rest in your Awareness and enjoy your Self :-)
